Brown & Toland Announces 2007 Financial Results

SAN FRANCISCO, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Brown & Toland Medical Group today announced a strong financial performance in 2007, with an operating income of $12 million on total revenues of $235 million.

The medical group also reported receiving approximately $4 million for pay for performance and other related bonuses from health plans. The medical group also announced that it will distribute an additional $8.2 million in bonus payments to eligible physicians. In 2007 Brown & Toland physicians received $7.2 million in general and quality bonuses from the medical group.

"We had another year of excellent financial performance and we are well positioned to continue to bring innovative solutions to today's health care challenges," said Gloria Austin, Brown & Toland's chief executive officer. "In 2007 we accelerated the rollout of our Physician Practice Solutions information technology program, and put strategies in place that will help transform Brown & Toland into a medical group that offers numerous products, not just HMO, to its physicians and patients."

Austin noted that in 2007 Brown & Toland took major strides to become an all-products company by beginning to build a PPO claims administration model that will allow the company to pay PPO claims, much like it pays HMO claims, to physicians. Brown & Toland's PPO physicians will benefit from a number of administrative efficiencies and consumers also will benefit by receiving comprehensive and coordinated care. Currently, there are more than 750 physicians in the Brown & Toland PPO network, and the medical group holds contracts with 11 PPOs.

"We are literally changing the way health care is delivered in the city of San Francisco by creating a model that enhances quality and disease management for all of our patients, not just our HMO patients," said Joel Klompus, M.D., Brown & Toland's President. "Our financial strength and stability have allowed us to invest in programs and technology that make us unique."

Austin added that in 2007 Brown & Toland continued its robust implementation of its IT suite of services. Additionally, she noted that the medical group now has built 12 interfaces with ancillary providers for Webbased clinical results reporting, and that at the end of 2007 Brown & Toland had more than 20 million reports available on its patients.

"Having this amount of patient data available to our physicians electronically means that our physicians can be more efficient and provide high quality care," said Klompus.
