Brez(R), the First Over-the-Counter, Intranasal Breathing Aid Clinically Proven to Reduce Primary Snoring, Debuts in Rite Aid Pharmacies

Data Show Significant Reduction In Snoring Events, Increase in Sleep Quality For Bed Partner

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- AirWare, Inc., maker of Brez premium nasal breathing aids, the first commercially available device for inside the nose clinically proven to reduce snoring and increase overall sleep quality for the bed partner, today announced availability in all Rite Aid and numerous independent pharmacies nationwide.

Unlike any other breathing aid, Brez is a drug-, latex- and adhesive-free, soft and pliable device that works directly and comfortably inside the nose to alleviate primary snoring (snoring without apnea). Snoring may result from congestion or relaxation of the nasal passages as airflow causes soft tissue to vibrate during sleep. Snoring sound levels are the result of that vibration. Brez, available in three sizes (small, medium and large) to ensure proper fit, inserts easily into the nose and gently lifts, expands and supports the interior walls of the nasal passages to reduce the resistance of airflow. The opening of the nasal airway reduces vibrations and therefore snoring. Brez will not interfere with other therapies such as sleep medications.

Brez has been reviewed and categorized as a Class I exempted medical device, based on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration definition, for marketing as an over-the-counter treatment to help relieve symptoms for multiple conditions related to impaired breathing such as snoring, congestion due to the common cold or allergies, and deviated septum.

Data from an independent clinical study involving 26 snorers (12 men and 14 women) with snoring (non-apneic) bed partners showed that those who used Brez experienced a 52 percent decrease in snoring events from an average of 1247 to 654. Snorers who used the device had only a 22.4 percent likelihood of persistent snoring and disturbing their bed partner's sleep compared to their pre-treatment scores of 100 percent. Both findings were statistically significant (p<0.05).

"I am impressed by the independent clinical data showing Brez usage resulted in a significant reduction of more than 50 percent of snoring events. Equally interesting, 88 percent of bed partners reported improved sleep quality when the product was used by the snorer," said George F. Gwinn, MD, clinical investigator, PsyPharma Global, and allergy and pulmonary specialist. "Each day, pharmacists nationwide serve as front-line healthcare providers to help consumers deal with issues such as snoring. Based on these data, it appears that Brez may be an innovative solution that pharmacists can recommend."

In addition to behavioral modifications such as changing sleep positions or weight management to effectively reduce primary snoring, there are a variety of over-the-counter treatments such as throat sprays or outer nasal devices. But, these products have limited efficacy. They are based on a short duration of action or the inherent limitations of external use such as proper placement and comfort issues, internal congestion, or the shape of the user's nose.

"We're pleased to begin our product launch with Rite Aid and independent pharmacies as our partners. Brez is different than anything else on the market today, because it effectively conforms to the user's anatomy to provide a proactive, non-pharmacological solution to snoring," said Mindi S. Osborn, President & CEO, AirWare, Inc. "The inconspicuous, comfortable material enables the user to keep the product in their nose throughout the night, while the convenience of a hygienic, daily disposable breathing aid means people can spend more time sleeping and less time worrying about not sleeping."

According to a survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, approximately 60 percent (183 million) of Americans suffer from snoring. Men are reported to snore twice as much as women. Primary snoring is typically associated with a variety of loud or disruptive noises when airflow is reduced during sleep.

One of the top health concerns associated with snoring is interrupted sleep for both the snorer and bed partner. An inability to maintain continuous sleep could lead to health consequences caused by sleep deprivation such as excessive sleepiness during the day, irritability, and a lack of productivity. People who snore chronically should discuss their condition with a physician, because it can be a symptom of sleep apnea (a reduction or cessation of breathing during sleep), a deviated septum or more serious health risks such as high blood pressure, strokes, and heart disease.

"The implications of snoring extend well beyond health and into the strength of relationships. Research indicates that individuals sleeping next to a snoring bed partner will lose between one and two hours of sleep each night due to the condition," said Osborn. "Because snoring can negatively impact the quality of the bed partner's sleep as well, it may also affect the overall satisfaction of the relationship. Brez nasal breathing aids can help end this frustration."
