o new Cottages are connected by a sunroom on the two-acre site and each has 12 private rooms, including two suites. Both Cottages feature a spacious open kitchen, a great room with fireplace, a dining room, den, and even a spa for whirlpool baths complete with fireplace, soft lighting and a flat screen TV.

"When people first walk into the Cottages, they can't believe they're in a skilled nursing facility," says Emerson Stambaugh, Administrator of the Deupree Cottages. "They look like charming, comfortable homes. The design and furnishings are totally out of their realm of thinking about what a nursing home could be."

"People automatically assume that a place like this would be extremely expensive, but actually the cost is in line with other top quality nursing homes in the area," Stambaugh adds.

The opening of the Deupree Cottages culminates a five-year effort by Episcopal Retirement Homes to find a better, more personalized approach to nursing care for older adults.

"The results have exceeded even our own expectations," Spitler says. "In the Cottages you're at home, not in a home. You really have to see them to believe it."
