Brain Fitness Industry Growth Driven By Science
Date:3/16/2009

mpressed with the program that I got a copy for my mom." Newman also says he continues to carve out time from his busy day for brain fitness exercises.

Database searches of major medical and science journals showed an annual growth rate in the publication of studies over the past three years of about 90 percent per year, from two studies in 2005 to 13 last year.

"New breakthrough studies are driving public awareness," Zimman said. "What's really exciting is that there seem to be almost as many studies being published just this quarter as in all of last year."

Experts caution that consumers of brain fitness products should not assume that just anything works. "Consumers should look for products with published studies showing the product worked, and should be wary of general claims that a product stimulates the brain when there is no published study of that product," said Mary Furlong, EdD, a professor at Santa Clara University and a leading authority on aging and computer technology.

The Posit Science technology has shown benefits in more than 30 published articles in leading science and medical journals.

The most recently published study of the Posit Science Brain Fitness Program was led by researchers at the Mayo Clinic and the University of Southern California. The study of 487 healthy adults showed that participants in the Brain Fitness Program more than doubled their brain processing speed, had improvements in memory and attention equal to about 10 years and noticed significant improvements in every day activities. These changes were clinically significant and were significantly greater than the changes in the control activity group, which were not clinically significant.

The study appears in the April 9th issue of The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society and an advance copy is now available online.
