Boeing, Intel, Maricopa Community Colleges Prep Educators for New Crop of High Tech Courses, Students

At the SEMI High Tech U (HTU) Teacher Academy, Arizona teachers will learn the latest methods to incorporate high-tech, industry-relevant activities into their curricula. The Academy is a collaborative effort between partners in education and industry to motivate students early in their academic career in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), which form the basis for many critical job skills.

The two-day event will host 36 middle and high school teachers who will take the knowledge to their students of aeronautics, engineering, nanotechnology, and other high-tech industries.

The Academy is sponsored by the Boeing Company, and is produced by the Maricopa Community Colleges. With generous support from Intel, teachers will receive ready-to-implement “Nanotechnology: Chemical Reactivity” kits for their students.

Friday, March 8:
10:45am – 12:15pm. Critical Thinking: Engineering Design Challenge. Teachers will create environmentally friendly 6-pack holders to develop real world solutions to an environmental problem.
1:30pm – 2:45pm. Inquiry Learning and Exploration: Matter Matters. Teachers will use game-based strategies to reinforce learning in their subject matter area.

Saturday, March 9:
8:30am – 9:45 am. Making Connections to the Real World/Presentation Skills: Nanotechnology. Participants will learn about everyday products that use nanotechnology such as stain-resistant pants and socks that don’t make your feet sweat!
10:00am – 11:30am. Contextual Learning: Aeronautics. Teachers learn the principals of aeronautics in a hands-on activity and discuss how to help students make connection between their education and future career choices.

MATEC, a department in Workforce Development, is a member of the Division of Academic and Student Affairs at the Maricopa Community Colleges.

High Tech U was created by San Jose, Calif.-based SEMI as a way of getting more students interested in high-tech careers. SEMI® is the global industry association serving the manufacturing supply chain for the micro- and nano-electronics industries, and has been delivering the HTU program internationally since 2001. The SEMI High Tech U Teacher Academy is also an official event of the Arizona SciTech Festival.
