Body Oasis Laser Aesthetics Medi Spa Acquires Noveon Nailaser for Treatment of Onychomycosis
Date:10/27/2013

Prescott, Arizona (PRWEB) October 28, 2013

Robin Fleck, M.D. founder and medical director of Body Oasis Laser Aesthetics medical spa announces the acquisition of the new Noveon Nailaser for the treatment of nail fungus. This laser replaces the Cynosure Pinpointe foot laser that did not perform as marketed.

Onychomycosis (fungal infection of the nail) affects about 12% of Americans, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Patients are predisposed to nail fungus through genetic inheritance and are more likely to get toenail fungus because they are exposed to the organisms in public areas such as locker rooms or pools, or because their feet are often damp and warm from tight-fitting shoes. Patients with diabetes commonly get fungus because blood circulation is poor and their resistance to infection is compromised. In most cases, nail fungus is merely a cosmetic problem; however, over time it can cause toenails to thicken or grow abnormally and become painful when walking.

There are at present two ways to resolve toenail fungus. Toenail laser treatment offers a new alternative to oral medication, which carries a risk of liver damage. Creams and sprays can prevent fungus from spreading; however, cure of nail fungus has not been seen with topical medications because such products cannot penetrate the nail.

For moderate to severe fungus, laser treatment is the best option for quick nail renewal with little follow-up care. With an 85% success rate, the Noveon Nailaser is the best current laser treatment for toenail fungus. Noveon’s developer says its laboratory research shows this laser actually kills fungus by exploiting two unique wavelengths of light. Most other lasers such as Cynosure’s Pinpointe laser heat the nail plate, inhibiting fungal growth, paving the way for the body's own defenses to clear the nail. Unfortunately, heating the nail can lead to burns and deformed nails and has not shown significant efficacy.

The Noveon laser is safe for all ages, including children with nail fungus, and the treatments are virtually painless, unlike other toenail lasers. The Noveon’s two wavelengths of laser light safely target the tissue without high residual heating that can scar the nail bed and surrounding tissue.

Unlike other lasers, the Noveon is effective with only three to four treatments. Oral drugs are not required for most patients; however, a few patients who do not respond to three treatments may benefit from a short course of oral medication and a fourth treatment session. Each session lasts sixteen minutes. After each treatment, the patient can resume daily activities. Patients are urged to follow a series of home care steps to prevent re-exposure to fungal organisms.

“My patients were very disappointed with the Pinpointe laser’s results last year so when I learned about Noveon’s technology I was excited to be able to offer my patients an effective therapy for this disfiguring condition,” comments Dr. Fleck. “I’ve treated all the former Pinpointe clients in my practice, and the clearance of fungus is remarkable.”
