Blunt: Democrats' Flawed Spending Compromise

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- House Republican Whip Roy Blunt (Mo.) issued the following statement today on congressional Democrats' alleged "compromise" offer to reduce their spending demands from $22 billion to $11 billion:

"This week Democrats offered to 'compromise' and reduce their demand for increased government spending from $22 billion to $11 billion. Interestingly, this offer did not include anything about which programs would receive more or less money. It was an offer devoid of any substance other than big dollar signs and lots of zeroes.

"This is similar to what we have witnessed on SCHIP, where Democrats have said they would be willing to compromise on policy, but not the $35 billion in spending. In other words, even if they agreed to policies that resulted in spending less money, they wouldn't adjust the spending levels to reflect those policies. It raises the question about whether Democrats care about good policy or just about more government spending.

"I do not support spending the hard-earned money of American families just for the sake of spending it. Yet, that is exactly what the majority is proposing. The people of this nation deserve more respect than that. House republicans will not agree to waste more of the American people's money just to say we 'compromised' with the Democrats."
