Biogel Introduces Polyisoprene (PI) Indicator Underglove
Date:3/20/2009

New Glove Allows Clinicians to Spot Punctures Sooner

NORCROSS, Ga., March 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Molnlycke Health Care US, LLC, maker of Biogel(R) surgical gloves and the only major surgical glove company with an exclusively powder-free glove line, adds a new glove to its line this month that helps clinicians notice punctures sooner.

The Biogel brand PI Indicator Underglove complements two polyisoprene surgical gloves already in the line. Users can double glove, wearing the PI Indicator Underglove with one of the existing PI surgical gloves to form a synthetic, patented puncture indication system. The double-glove puncture indication system provides an immediate visual warning in the presence of fluid.

Biogel's existing Patented Puncture Indicator System, using latex gloves, alerts wearers to a puncture. The new PI Indicator Underglove completes the only polyisoprene patented puncture indication system available. It also provides a clearer glove puncture indication compared to competitor double-gloving.(1)

The PI Indicator Underglove is a soft glove that feels, looks like, and performs like latex. However, this glove has greater tactile sensitivity than the Biogel brand PI. Additionally, the new glove has the features found in all Biogel brand surgical gloves -- an industry-leading 0.65 AQL; non-pyrogenic; powder-free; 100% inspected; skin-soothing; low chemical levels and an inner Biogel terpolymer coating. Biogel brand gloves are packaged in premium quality packaging, which features easy peel with an easy-grip flap and bar coding. The inner wrap clearly identifies the left and right gloves and slides easily out of the outer pouch easily when setting up the back table.

Double gloving can significantly decrease risk.(2) Professional societies also support double gloving as a means of reducing risk in certain procedures. The Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses recommends that "Healthcare practitioners should double-glove during invasive procedures."(3) The American College of Surgeons Committee on Operating Room Environment says, "Double gloving does help to cut down by a factor of ten the number of potential exposures..."(4)

A healthcare professional's risk of exposure and the subsequent potential for seroconversion can be significant. Published seroconversion rates are hepatitis B virus (HBV), 1/10; hepatitis C virus (HCV), 1/20; and HIV, 1/300.(5)

"Double gloving is an important risk management tool," says Judith Seltzer, RN. "Industry surveys show glove failure rates vary from 11 percent to 51 percent,(6) so we believe it is critical to take measures to protect both the practitioner and the patient as much as possible. Our Biogel(R) Patented Puncture Indication System clearly lets you know when the outer glove has been perforated in the presence of fluid," Graves adds. Use of a patented double gloving system results in significantly greater detection of punctures (78%) during the operation than using single glove (42%).(7) In a recent study, researchers found "double gloving with an indicator system provides the best protection and allows the timeliest identification of perforations."(8)

Molnlycke Health Care provides healthcare facilities with a unique team approach that results in tailored, well-rounded glove solutions. This includes a full-line of powder-free, low-protein latex and non-latex glove styles to address all specialty needs. As reported in The Cochrane Review, the Biogel patented, puncture indication glove system (in either latex or non-latex) provides protection and an alert system for barrier breach which increases practitioner safety.(i)
