A graduate of McMaster University, Hamilton, Ont., with a degree in economics, Johnstone is a fellow of the Chartered Insurance Professionals, a fellow of the Insurance Institute of Ontario, a certified fire and explosion investigator and a licensed independent adjuster for all lines. He is a member of the Canadian Trucking Association, Ontario Independent Adjusters Association, Insurance Institute of Canada and International Association of Special Investigation.
