Bastyr University’s Dr. Pizzorno is Bestowed with the Coveted Visionary Award from the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine
Date:10/16/2018

Bastyr University is pleased announce that Dr. Joseph E. Pizzorno was the recipient of the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine’s (AIHM) Visionary Award for his passionate efforts in forging a new health care paradigm dedicated to natural medicine.

Dr. Pizzorno was selected as AIHM’s recipient of the Visionary Award due to his tireless effort in naturopathic medicine echoing the values of the organization: People. Planet. Purpose. AIHM acknowledged Dr. Pizzorno for his unwavering passion, wisdom and courage in leading the medical field toward a higher understanding of natural medicine and its practices.

Dr. Pizzorno’s commitment to sharing knowledge began as early as 1978, when he co-founded Bastyr University, and later led it to become the first accredited naturopathic medicine college in the country. Now 40 years later, he has gone on to become the editor-in-chief of PubMed-indexed Integrative Medicine: a Clinician’s Journal (IMCJ), and currently serves on several prestigious boards including the Institute for Functional Medicine (as treasurer); American Herbal Pharmacopeia; Hecht Foundation; Gateway for Cancer Research; and Bioclinic Naturals. He has also served on two Presidential commissions focused on the integration of natural medicine into the U.S. health care system.

Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine (AIHM) presents this prestigious award to Dr. Pizzorno and recognizes Bastyr University as the trailblazing pioneer in integrative health and the transformation of healthcare. This award recognizes Bastyr University’s holistic philosophy of person-centered care, an approach that focuses on prevention of illness and treating the whole person -- body, mind, and spirit -- to achieve optimal health and healing, a mindset that forms the backbone of Bastyr University as a whole.

AIHM has created a global, interprofessional community of integrative clinicians who embrace a person-centered, team-based approach to health care. They provide transformational educational programs and connections to a global network of providers.

Bastyr University focuses on putting the patient in the driver’s seat by presenting them with all available options of care, both standard and holistic, and providing them with a plan that aims to take care of the person as a whole, beyond initial diagnosis.

As the demand for holistic medicine rises, Bastyr providers take care of the patient as a whole, not just their medical diagnosis, thereby improving patients’ overall health outcomes. A leader in science-based natural medicine, Bastyr exemplifies the future of natural medicine by their “triple aim” approach: healthier patients, lower health care costs, and high level of satisfaction.
