BMI of Texas Hosts Successful 2009 Walk from Obesity

San Antonio walk led the nation in number of participants.

(PRWEB) March 13, 2010 -- The Bariatric Medical Institute of Texas (“BMI of Texas”) today announced the success of the ASMBS Foundation and Obesity Action Coalition’s (OAC) annual Walk from Obesity in San Antonio. According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Foundation, San Antonio’s 2009 Walk from Obesity led the nation in the number of walkers and was the #3 fundraising event nationally.

During the course of 2009 in more than 70 cities all across the United States, those affected by obesity, healthcare professionals and many more gathered to show their support for the fight against obesity. In San Antonio, local lead sponsor BMI of Texas headed up the November 8, 2009 event, which drew more than 300 participants.

“In just our first year of hosting the Walk from Obesity, we inspired hundreds of walkers to get out and walk away from obesity. The response from the community – the companies and organizations who donated as well as the walkers themselves – was incredible and we are looking forward to even bigger event next year,” said San Antonio bariatric surgeon Dr. Mickey Seger, who co-founded the Bariatric Medical Institute of Texas with San Antonio bariatric surgeon Dr. Terive Duperier.

BMI of Texas, located in San Antonio's Medical Center area, helps patients achieve their weight loss goals through various surgical procedures including gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band and sleeve gastrectomy. For patients who experience some weight regain after surgery, BMI of Texas offers some new endoscopic procedures, such as Stomaphyx. Endoscopy is a safe, non-surgical technique where the surgeon inserts a scope through the patient’s mouth, down the esophagus, and into the stomach pouch. With Stomaphyx, the gastroscope is inserted into the patient’s mouth down into an existing gastric pouch and ‘sutures’ are used to make the original gastric pouch smaller. Additionally, the surgeons perform a full spectrum of advanced laparoscopic procedures, including laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication (anti-reflux surgery), laparoscopic colon surgery, laparoscopic pancreatic surgery, and laparoscopic hernia surgeries.

“The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Foundation and the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) thank all those who participated and volunteered their time for this year’s Walk from Obesity. We are very proud and honored to have such dedicated individuals throughout the obesity community to help raise awareness of this disease, continue research for treatment and eliminate the negative stigma associated with it,” said Joseph Nadglowski, Jr., ASMBS Foundation Executive Director, OAC President and CEO.

The Obesity Action Coalition and ASMBS Foundation’s Walk from Obesity was established to raise awareness of the obesity epidemic and to support initiatives focusing on prevention, education, research, treatment and advocacy. Walkers raise money by asking friends, family, and co-workers to sponsor them. In addition to walker income, funds are raised through sponsorship, matching gifts, corporate contributions and other fundraising activities. Funds raised through this event will support the ASMBS Foundation and the OAC in their efforts to increase research funding for morbid obesity, improve awareness of the negative stigma associated with obesity and provide educational information for all those affected by this disease.
