BIOSAFE Labs and Glycemion to Provide Free Diabetes Risk Assessment Kits to U.S. School Children
Date:2/5/2008

LAKE FOREST, Ill., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- BIOSAFE Laboratories, Inc., the developer of the BIOSAFE Diabetes Risk Assessment, and Glycemion, the United States distributor, have announced the availability of a limited number of test kits for use in schools to help identify diabetic and pre-diabetic children and adolescents. The BIOSAFE Diabetes Risk Assessment is a two-part process comprised of an immediate fasting glucose reading and a mail-in laboratory analysis for hemoglobin A1c, a blood glucose marker for the previous ninety-day period. Samples for both tests can be either professionally collected or self-collected through the use of a simple finger-nick collection kit. Taken in combination, these two results become a reliable indicator of diabetes or a pre-diabetes condition.

When blood glucose (sugar) levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes, a condition known as pre-diabetes exists. If discovered early, a person with pre-diabetes can avoid the devastating complications of diabetes through education, diet, exercise, and appropriately prescribed medications.

"Diabetes is a debilitating, crippling, and life-shortening disease whose most serious complications like blindness, heart disease and kidney failure can often be prevented with early detection. Current trends show that the incidence of diabetes is increasing among children and adolescents. For this reason we are pleased to make the BIOSAFE Diabetes Risk Assessment available to school age children to assist in the early identification of diabetes and pre-diabetes," said Jack Maggiore, PhD, president of BIOSAFE Laboratories, Inc. "Despite decades of med
