BHM Healthcare Congratulates PORT Human Services: First to Receive CABHA Status
Date:5/18/2010

PORT Human Services, a substance abuse and mental health service provider in the state of North Carolina was recently awarded the status of a Critical Access Behavioral Health Agency (CABHA). The CABHA represents a new category for mental health and substance abuse services which has been touted as the future of mental health care in the state of North Carolina.

(PRWEB) May 18, 2010 -- The Department of Health and Human Services has approved a definition and description of a new category of provider agency, a Critical Access Behavioral Health Agency (CABHA). In May PORT Human Services became one of the first provider agencies to be awarded this designation in the state of North Carolina. The CABHA is designed to ensure that critical services are delivered by a clinically competent organization with appropriate medical oversight as well as the ability to deliver a continuum of services.

The CABHA designation is considered an evolution in the provision of mental health. The CABHA will move the public system over time to a more coherent service delivery model that reduces clinical fragmentation at the local level and begins to prepare the provider community for the changes that will be required to deliver cost effective high quality care. “We are very pleased to be recognized as leaders in the mental health community, and to have been among the first recipients of the CABHA status in the State of North Carolina,” stated Tom Savidge, CEO of PORT Human Services. CABHA providers will offer services in five categories: case management, peer support for recovery initiatives, community-support teams for adults, intensive in-home treatment for children, and day treatment for children and adults.

“This is a wonderful achievement for PORT Human Services, and reflects the organizations unique vision for superior quality patient care, in a financially and fiscally responsible way,” stated Brian Johnson, SVP of Finance and Claims Operations for Behavioral Health Management, an expert healthcare consulting firm. Mr. Johnson went on to say that as an expert health consultant, “I have had the pleasure of working with and assisting the executive team members of PORT Human Services, to optimize how PORT Human Services utilizes technology in association with superior care models to reduce costs and increase efficiency in the healthcare industry.” As of April 19, 2010 more than 474 applications for CABHA status were received by the state of North Carolina, but to date only around a dozen organizations have qualified for the CABHA designation and even fewer have been awarded CABHA status.
