BHCC Dedicates 48,000-Square-Foot Health & Wellness Center
Date:3/22/2010

BOSTON, March 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bunker Hill Community College will dedicate a new Health & Wellness Center on Tuesday, March 23, at 11 a.m., BHCC President Mary L. Fifield announced today.  Representing the Commonwealth at the event will be Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray, State Representative Eugene L. O'Flaherty, and Division of Capital Asset Management Commissioner David B. Perini.

Chair of the BHCC Board of Trustees Jeanne-Marie Boylan will officiate. Bunker Hill Community College President Mary L. Fifield will also address the audience, as will Interim President of the BHCC Community College Foundation Stephen B. Weiner.

The Health & Wellness Center, a two-story structure, houses state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories supporting students majoring in nurse education and health professions, as well as the College's first gymnasium and a fitness center.  The building is expected to earn a LEED Gold designation from the U.S. Green Building Council, which sets the nationally accepted benchmarks for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

The dedication of the structure comes at a moment when enrollment at the College is at an all-time high, with 11,700 students. Development of a new Health & Wellness Center reflects Bunker Hill Community College's commitment to meeting Greater Boston's workforce needs in healthcare, a key component of the regional economy, as well as to serving the increasing number of students seeking higher education opportunities in Massachusetts.

Bunker Hill Community College is the largest community college in Massachusetts. The College enrolls more than 11,700 students on two campuses and at five satellite locations. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in Massachusetts. Six in ten students are people of color and more than half of BHCC's students are women. The College also enrolls more than 700 international students who come from more than 95 countries and speak 75 different languages.
