Avenidas to Host 10th Annual Caregiver Conference in Mountain View, CA

Avenidas and the city of Mountain View will present the 10th Annual Caregiver Conference on Saturday, September 28 at the Mountain View Senior Center and Avenidas Rose Kleiner Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Both locations are on one campus and parking is free.

The conference, entitled “The Path to Empowerment,” will be held in two parts beginning with registration at 9 a.m. at the Mountain View Senior Center, 266 Escuela Avenue, Mountain View. Introductions, overview and a keynote address, “Compassionate Communication,” will follow. Dr. Edie Yau, the Director of Diversity and Inclusion for the Alzheimer’s Association North California and Northern Nevada Chapter, will speak about strategies for improving overall communication skills to connect with memory-impaired individuals and respond to behavioral changes.

The conference’s first session will begin at 10:30 a.m. as guests can choose one of three workshops: Conflict & Caregiving: The Unexpected Gifts, with Jack Hamilton, PhD; The 3Ds: Dementia, Delirium, Depression, with Dr. Elizabeth Landsverk; and Effectively Manage Your Hospital Stay: From ER to Discharge Planning, with Paula Wolfson, LCSW.

After a 10 minute break, session two will begin at 11:30 a.m. as guests will again choose one of three workshops: End-of-Life Caregiving, with Tiffany Hawkins; Coping with Cognitive Decline and Changes in Behaviors, with Tiffany Mikles; and Legal Services to Protect Your Loved Ones, with Linda Kramer.

Lunch will be held from 12:20 to 1 p.m. before the conference shifts to Avenidas Rose Kleiner Center at 270 Escuela Avenue. Affinity Groups will be held from 1-2 p.m. These roundtable discussions will be facilitated by geriatric care professionals. The third session of the day, Caregiver Empowerment: Staying Calm and Moving Forward, will be held from 2-2:50 p.m. The discussion will be led by Christina Irving of Family Caregiver Alliance.

The conference will conclude at 3 p.m., but guests can stay for an optional tour of Avenidas Rose Kleiner Center.

The cost for registration is $45. An early registration is available before September 20 for $35. Registration includes food and drink, keynote speech, affinity groups, workshops, access to sponsors, door prizes and more.
