Minor fender benders and serious car accidents are common sights on the road that require parties to the accident to respond appropriately to the situation. According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data from 2010, accidents, including car accidents, are the fifth leading cause of death (i). In fact, in 2005, automobile accident-related deaths cost over $70 billion each year. Additionally, more than 2.3 million drivers and passengers receive treatment in an emergency room every year because of motor vehicle accidents (ii). These statistics highlight the commonality of traffic accidents in daily life. The frequency of such accidents makes it important for everyone to know what to do after an auto accident.

The new infographic lists four areas parties to a car accident need to consider. First, “think about safety.” Safety of yourself and your passengers should always be your primary concern after an accident. This means you should turn on your emergency lights, call the police, and tell the police if you need emergency medical care. Second, “collect information.” You need to get the other driver’s pertinent contact information as well as taking pictures and notes on the circumstances surrounding the accident. Third, “seek medical help.” You should be examined by your doctor as soon as possible and tell him that you have been in an accident. Injuries may be present even if you do not feel them immediately.
