Audiologists at Maico Audiological Services in Newport News Virginia Advise Consumers about Drugs that Lead to Hearing Loss
Date:12/31/2013

Newport News, VA (PRWEB) December 31, 2013

Ototoxic medications are either prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) drugs that can impair your hearing and hinder your balance. As reported by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASLHA), there are over 200 known drugs that can cause temporary or permanent hearing loss and even balance disorders. To draw attention to this issue and teach the community about the most common oxotoxic medications and drugs, the Audiologists at Maico Audiological Services in Newport News have published an overview of medications and drugs known to impact hearing ability on their website at Prevalent Drugs and Medications in the Ototoxic Category. Maico Audiological Services' article highlights 5 categories of medications and drugs.

Loop Diuretics – High blood pressure, heart failure, and some kidney disorders are often treated with Loop diuretics.

Salicylates – Salicylates are substances in aspirin – one of the most widely used heart disease treatments and pain reliever.

NSAIDs – Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can result in temporary tinnitus and hearing loss. Two commonly recognized NSAIDs are naproxen and ibuprofen.

Chemotherapy Drugs – Potent medicines such as bleomycin, carboplatin, cisplatin and cyclophosphamide are used to treat cancer, but can cause permanent hearing damage.

Aminoglycoside Antibiotics – Aminoglycoside antibiotics are used in the treatment of bacterial infections; they have names such as streptomycin, gentamicin, kanamycin, amikacin and neomycin.

Any person experiencing hearing loss in Newport News is urged to talk with the hearing health care specialists at Maico Audiological Services. Medications are just one of a large number of contributors to hearing difficulties. A complete hearing test and examination of the ear and ear canal is required to determine the specific root cause of each person's hearing loss.
