The November 7, 2008 online edition of U.S. News & World Report ranks the nation's best health plans and determined that Kaiser Permanente leads Colorado in quality and member satisfaction. The rankings will be available online at http://www.usnews.com/healthplans.

Nationally, Kaiser Permanente Colorado's Medicare Advantage Plan was ranked #8. Among nearly 300 commercial health plans in the U.S., Kaiser Permanente Colorado was ranked #42. Both of these premier rankings earned Kaiser Permanente Colorado honors as one of "America's Best Health Plans" in 2008.

Kaiser Permanente received attention for its best in class service earlier this year when J.D. Power and Associates named the company "Highest in Member Satisfaction" among all health plans in Colorado.

"Kaiser Permanente is committed to providing great service and high quality care at an affordable price," said Donna Lynne, DrPH, president, Kaiser Permanente Colorado. "As we add new products and expand into Southern Colorado, it is terrific to hear from our current members that we're listening to their health needs and providing convenient, trusted, and personalized care. This is our mission and our passion."

"Exceptional quality and market-leading member satisfaction are in large part the result of Kaiser Permanente's industry leading approach to coordinating care and leveraging a state-of-the art electronic medical record system," added Bill Wright, MD, executive medical director. "Our members enjoy unparalleled access to their health information online and are supported by an award-winning physician and medical team that has the most advanced health information technology at their fingertips."

Kaiser Permanente's unique combination of clinical experts and health IT tools improves patient safety, coordinates care and decision-making, enhances documentation, supports adherence to evidence-based clinical guidelines, improves provider and operational efficiency and makes care more convenient for our members.

Examples of Kaiser Permanente's leading service and quality initiatives include:

-- Online convenience and choice --- members have 24/7 secure access to

manage their health online through kp.org, including the ability to

email their doctor, check lab results, refill prescriptions, view

immunizations, enroll in personalized health programs, and more.

-- Physician quality --- 99 percent of physician shareholders are board

certified. In 2008, 71 physicians received the NCQA's highest honor

for excellence in diabetes care.

-- Pioneering information technology --- Kaiser Permanente boasts the

world's largest civilian electronic medical record system. This

sophisticated technology improves safety and allows clinicians to

proactively outreach and support patients from preventive screenings to

disease management.

-- Proven quality outcomes --- members are more likely to receive proven

treatments for chronic diseases like asthma, heart disease, and diabetes

to improve their health.

-- Warm welcomes --- New members receive a personal phone call and

customized new member kit which includes information about how to access

services, choose a personal physician, and make an appointment.

More About the Rankings

The basis for the US News & World Report rankings is data collected, analyzed and converted to scores from zero to 100 by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), a private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. The three reporting categories include consumer experience, prevention and treatment. Kaiser Permanente Colorado's score of 85.7 gave it the highest score of any plan in Colorado.

Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Colorado received the highest numerical score among large commercial health plans in Colorado in the proprietary J.D. Power and Associates 2008 National Health Insurance Plan Study based on 37,060 total member responses, measuring 4 plans in Colorado (excludes Medicare and Medicaid). The study looked at coverage and benefits; choice of doctors, hospitals and pharmacies; information and communication; approval processes; claims processing; insurance statements; and customer service. Proprietary study results are based on experiences and perceptions of members surveyed November-December 2007.
