Atlanta Plastic Surgeon Dr. David Whiteman Says Increased Popularity of Ethnic Rhinoplasty, Indicated by Latest ASPS Statistics, Emphasizes Need for Experienced Surgeons

Serving the diverse Atlanta community since 1993, double board certified cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon Dr. David Whiteman has specialized in ethnic rhinoplasty, for 20 years. Rhinoplasty is a more prevalent procedure for ethnic patients and can be among the most challenging of all facial procedures because intricate nasal structures require attention to detail to yield natural-looking results. Dr. Whiteman emphasizes the importance of maintaining cultural identity with cosmetic procedures and selecting a surgeon knowledgeable of and experienced with ethnic diversity in plastic surgery.

Featured on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta during NeNe Leakes’ plastic surgery journey, Dr. Whiteman acknowledges the structural differences in African American (Black) rhinoplasty as well as other groups such as Hispanic (Latino) rhinoplasty and Asian rhinoplasty. Dr. Whiteman cites the risk of scarring as a prominent concern amongst ethnic patients because they tend to have more fibrous tissue than Caucasian patients. Another anatomical concern is cartilage because ethnic patients typically have weaker cartilage and shorter bones.

To produce the most natural-looking results, Dr. Whiteman employs an implantless technique that harvests the patient’s own tissues to augment the nose. Implants can place a patient at higher risk for infection or rejection of the foreign material.
