Atlanta (PRWEB) January 10, 2013
Atlanta LASIK surgery center, the Atlanta Vision Institute, recently published a response to a study found in the Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences about the correlation between increased coffee consumption and the risk of developing a type of glaucoma, which could lead to vision loss or even blindness.
The study based some of its findings on the correlation between the Scandinavian population having the highest rate of Glaucoma and highest coffee consumption as well. Other findings have shown that those who consumed several cups of coffee a day were at an elevated risk of developing open-angle glaucoma, which is a gradual disease that can slowly lead to vision loss. However, researchers didn’t find this same elevated risk for those who consumed other caffeinated beverages, such as tea, or even decaffeinated coffee.
Dr. Ashraf, board certified ophthalmologist and LASIK surgeon of the Atlanta Vision Institute, posted this study on his website and responded to it, claiming that while this research is important to be aware of, it does not mean we should stay away from coffee all together.
“I don’t believe that coffee is a direct cause of Glaucoma and I also don’t believe we should all stop drinking coffee. But I do believe that people should have annual eye exams to prevent eye diseases like Glaucoma, especially those with a family history of Glaucoma,” says Dr. Ashraf. “Prevention is better than remediation, and it's much easier to prevent eye illnesses through early diagnoses and treatment.”
With over 40,000 LASIK surgeries under his belt, Dr. Ashraf is one of the most experienced LASIK surgeons worldwide. He performed advanced cornea and refractive surgery training at the famous Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University, which has been ranked as one of the best medical institutions nationwide.
