Athletes “Toward Injury Prevention in Sports” TIPS Gets Going in Las Vegas
Date:1/13/2014

Fort Washington MD (PRWEB) January 13, 2014

In November of 2013, Dr. Jay Greenstein, sent an update to the Sport and Spine Rehab team outlining a new program being developed through his association with the Foundation 4 Chiropractic Progress (http://www.F4CP.org). He was working on an important public health project – helping to build a new organization known as “TIPS”. Dr. Greenstein, along with two other TIPS board members Dr. Alan Sokoloff (team chiropractor for the Baltimore Ravens), and Dr. Spencer Baron (team chiropractor for the Miami Dolphins) had just completed taping their first community workshop at the Miami Dolphins Sun Life Stadium. Drs. Greenstein, Sokoloff and Baron are known as “The Three Amigos.”

“TIPS”, the acronym for Towards Injury Prevention in Sports, is a program driven by the need to raise awareness and ensure the protection and safety of youth participants in sports, especially those sports that put players at risk for collisions and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The TIPS modules include (1) Concussion, (2) Dehydration, (3) Sports Nutrition and (4) Sports Injury Prevention.

“The Three Amigos, along with the CPR Communications and the Foundation 4 Chiropractic Progress, have been building this community awareness program for almost two years. We have created community workshops that we are delivering to coaches, trainers, athletes and parents that will improve the safety and well-being of our nation’s youth” said Dr. Greenstein. “The need for this program is evident. Recently a study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine reported that ‘key messages from published concussion management guidelines have not reached community sports coaches and sports trainers. This needs to be redressed to maximize the safety of all of those involved in community sport’, which is why we’ve taken the lead to build out these important public health workshops.”

TIPS is the brainchild of CPR Communications co-founders and Foundation 4 Chiropractic supporters, Laura and Joe Carabello, and has recently added Ed Goren, former Vice Chairman of Fox Sports, to its board.

According to Greenstein, “This has been a true team effort. Laura and Joe Carabello had great vision to see the need for this very impactful community program. Kent Greenawalt (Chairman and Founder of Foot Levelers and Chairman of the Foundation) is providing his always unyielding support, and Ed Goren has been hugely important in this initiative. He is a great supporter of TIPS and has been amazing at opening important major league sports and corporate sponsorship doors for us.”

A key purpose of the first taping of Sun Life Stadium workshop was to create a video to share with the major sports leagues and corporate sponsors. The video is complete and the sharing has begun. “We understand that youth sports is a five billion dollar a year industry”, remarks Greenstein. “Companies in this space have a great opportunity to align with TIPS, and have a significant and positive impact on the youth of our country, all while building their brand.”

This past week in Las Vegas, at the Parker Seminar - one of the largest chiropractic conferences - the first TIPS training was completed to instruct doctors of chiropractic and athletic trainers to deliver the TIPS program to the community.

Chiropractic Economics, put the “Three Amigos” on the cover and ran a feature story about the origin and mission of the TIPS program. Said Sokoloff in the article, “There’s never been a bigger nonpolitical chiropractic movement than this. For some of us, this is what we’ve been doing, but now we have a chance to do it on a bigger scale.” Dr. Baron’s comments in the article align with that sentiment stating, “Ever since graduating chiropractic college, I wanted to accomplish something with global impact.”

For Sport and Spine Rehab, the rewards are many. “We are always proud of what Jay is doing to further the profession, and advocating for improved safety and treatment for patients,” said Curt Christiansen, Chief Operating Officer of Sport and Spine Rehab. “Jay embodies the Sport and Spine Rehab values, and as far as TIPS goes, who could not get excited about a program that makes our kids safer?”

Sport and Spine Rehab Clinical Research Coordinator, Jena Etnoyer, ATC, M.Ed., also provided content for the concussion program, and was among the first in the country to be trained for all four TIPS modules. Dr. Chris Steacy, DC, ART©, CKTP, CSCS, Clinic Director of Sport and Spine Rehab of Columbia (http://www.ssrehab.com/about/clinical-staff/dr-chris-steacy/) was also in attendance.
