The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an international non-profit organisation set up to promote solutions to the problem of overfishing. The MSC runs the only certification and eco-labelling programme for wild-capture fisheries consistent with the ISEAL Code of Good Practice for Setting Social and Environmental Standards and the United Nations FAO guidelines for fisheries certification. The MSC has offices in London, England; Seattle, Washington, USA; Tokyo, Japan; Sydney, Australia; The Hague, Netherlands; Edinburgh, Scotland; Berlin, Germany; and Cape Town, South Africa. In total, more than 150 fisheries are engaged in the MSC program with 50 certified, more than 100 under assessment and another 20 to 30 in confidential pre-assessment.
