The assessment can help employers to design an effective drug free workplace program.
The U.S. Department of Labor created "Drug-Free Work Week 2007" in an effort to educate businesses about the importance of promoting drug-free policies in the workplace and to encourage workers with drug and addiction problems to seek help. An estimated 75% of illicit drug users are employed and 42 million binge drinkers hold full time positions.
Drug free workplace programs help employers to deter, detect and take corrective action related to substance use that affects workplace safety. It provides a safer work environment while allowing the employer to mitigate the costs associated with workers who have drug or alcohol problems. Those costs include higher rates of absence and tardiness; on-the-job accidents; workers' compensation claims; medical claims; and pilferage, theft and loss. The average cost to employers is up to $25,000 annually per substance user.
