Date:1/21/2013

(PRWEB) January 21, 2013

Asheville Academy for Girls, a therapeutic boarding school for troubled teen girls is proud to introduce Shelley Tom as a Therapist. Shelley has a background in working with middle-school aged children in both public school and residential wilderness settings.

“Shelley's compassion and skillfulness flow effortlessly with her adept communication,” commented Daisy, a parent of a client from Asheville, "She is both empowering and safe, and this combination has allowed my daughter to face her overwhelming fears and phobias with a sense of self-discovery. My daughter is able to see her challenges as just that, and is working in earnest, with real awareness, to access her best self in the face of her deepest anxieties, in large part to Shelley's guidance.”

As a therapist for Asheville Academy, a therapeutic program for youth, Shelley stresses the acquisition and mastery of coping skills and relationship skills through psycho-educational groups and in-the-moment practice while in milieu. In individual therapy, she blends cognitive-behavioral therapy with mindfulness techniques to address their specific issues.

“We are very excited to add Shelley to our growing team. She came highly recommended from other professionals with whom we have worked closely in the past,” stated Bryan Tomes, Executive Director. “A very important part of great outcomes in a therapeutic environment is the savvy of the clinical staff. With Shelley on board we take one more step in our goal to be the premier middle school program for girls in the world.”

Shelley utilizes her knowledge of parenting and family therapy, as well as her communication skills, to support the development of healthier family relationships. She supports a strong therapeutic milieu and plans to be involved in many aspects of the program.

“Shelley brought enthusiasm, creativity and awareness into her work at Footsteps, Second Nature Blue Ridge,” stated Erica Thiessen, LPC. “She is a clever, caring and a clinically strong individual, with a presence for clients that makes her work heartfelt and rich.”

Shelley earned her Masters from Western Carolina University in 2008. During her training and as a licensed clinician, she has practiced in a myriad of setting from agency work and private practice to residential wilderness.

Stated Shelley, “I am thrilled to be part of such a great team of professionals as I follow my passion of working with adolescent girls; I look forward to working with the girls and their families at Asheville Academy for Girls.”

When she isn’t serving the girls at the Asheville Academy’s therapeutic boarding school for girls, Shelley is busy with her husband and her 11 and 8 year old boys. She enjoys traveling, snowboarding, yoga, hiking, mountain biking, dancing, and recently took up surfing. Shelley also enjoys supporting her children’s Tae Kwon Do practice and their emotional and educational discovery.
