As Tylenol lawsuits (http://www.tylenollawsuitclaims.com/) involving liver injuries continue to move forward in federal court, Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes that a new study is questioning one of the benefits purportedly associated with acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol-brand over-the-counter medications. The research, which appears in the The Lancet, looked at 1,643 people with acute low-back pain, all of whom were given either acetaminophen or a placebo for their pain. After three-months of treatment, roughly 2/3 of the subjects reported satisfactory results regardless of whether they were taking acetaminophen or a placebo. The researchers were unable to discern any variations in terms of pain, recovery time, function, disability, symptom change, sleep or quality of life.*
“Dozens of people have filed Tylenol lawsuits alleging the acetaminophen in these medications caused serious liver injuries. This study is just a reminder that despite its near-ubiquitous presence in most households, the benefits of acetaminophen may not always outweigh its risks,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing the victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is offering free legal reviews to consumers who were allegedly harmed by a Tylenol-brand over-the-counter medication.
Tylenol Liver Damage Litigation
According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol products, was the leading cause of acute liver failure in the U.S. between 1998 and 2003.* The Philadelphia Inquirer recently reported that 78,000 people require emergency room care every year due to toxic reactions to acetaminophen. Such injuries also result in about 33,000 hospitalizations every year.**
In April, the FDA announced that prescription drugs containing more than 325 milligrams of acetaminophen were no longer considered safe and were being voluntarily removed from the market. *** However, according to a Bloomberg.com report, over-the-counter Extra Strength Tylenol caplets each contain 500 mg of acetaminophen. Last year, McNeil Consumer Healthcare announced that it would add new, more prominent warnings regarding the risk of liver damage to the labels of Tylenol-brand medication.****
According to court documents, at least 147 Tylenol liver damage claims are currently pending in the litigation underway in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. All of the lawsuits were filed on behalf of individuals who allegedly suffered injuries due to acetaminophen in Tylenol products. In many cases, plaintiffs claim that liver damage occurred even though the drugs were used in accordance with label directions, and resulted in hospitalization, the need for liver transplantation or death.
Individuals who suffered serious liver damage allegedly related to the acetaminophen in a Tylenol medication may be entitled to compensation for their injury-related damages.
