NEW YORK, May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Capturing vividly the core message of HealthCorps' fight against childhood obesity, artist Neera Dahiya's painting "Not Just DNA" was successfully auctioned at The Green Garden Gala, hosted by Dr. Mehmet Oz, HealthCorps' Founder and Chairman, and his wife Lisa Oz, at the World Financial Center on Thursday, April 30.
Auction winner, Ms. Amberleigh Thetford, who made the impressive four-figure winning bid, commented, "Dahiya's painting, 'Not Just DNA' is much like the title of the piece, beyond life and full of meaning, which is what made this piece attractive to me. Life is more than your DNA; it's about taking whatever is thrown at you, much like a canvas, and holding onto it, giving each person texture, and creating a life full of art and beauty. I very much look forward to seeing and investing in more of her work in the future."
Neera Dahiya, an abstract expressionist artist, focuses on the complexity, dynamism, and multiple layers of human emotion and existence, expressing these themes in her paintings through physical tactile media and visual texture, encompassing several dimensions. Conceived as a part of the "Individuals and External Influences" series (2009), "Not Just DNA" is a composite representation of what defines an individual -- their DNA, or internal constitution, but more overpoweringly so, the strength and richness of their life experiences, influences and choices. While very diverse, the two constitutional elements are integrated in the painting, emphasizing the overall magnificence of human individuality.
In addition to raising funds for HealthCorps' mission, the Gala honored Musical Genius Quincy Jones, Actor and Performer Ben Vereen, New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein and New York Philanthropist and CEO of the Red Apple Group John Catsimatidis for their contributions to the health and well being of American youth.
