Article on Steroid Use for Back Pain Highlights the Effectiveness of Surgery in Treating Disk Pain, says Dr. Seyed M. Rezaian

In an article based on a reader’s question that was published August 16 by CDA Press, the expert guest author addressed the topic of treating back pain caused by a disrupted disk by using steroids rather than back surgery. The author explained that, while steroids were shown to slightly improve physical function in patients suffering from a herniated disk, the level of pain that patients experienced and the number who would eventually need surgery was not positively affected by the steroid regimen. Seyed M. Rezaian, M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.S., F.I.C.S., the medical director of California Orthopedic Medical Clinic, Inc., notes that it is understandable that people would be drawn to seemingly less invasive methods of care to treat their back pain before turning to surgery. Yet, he notes that there are, in fact, highly effective methods of relatively non-invasive laser back surgery that provide results both in terms of mobility and pain reduction that are far superior to the results seen with steroid use alone.

Specifically, he explains, the Universal Endoscopic Laser Discectomy (UED) procedure can provide the results that patients are looking for, combined with the minimally invasive approach that they appreciate. The procedure, which involves a small 1/10" incision at the site of the herniated disk, is in fact so minimally invasive that it can be performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. Dr. Rezaian notes that the procedure is designed to remove and repair only the damaged portion of the affected disk.

This impact is so low in many cases, Dr. Rezaian adds, that one independent review of UED patients found that 90 percent of patients surveyed were able to return to their jobs with which their back pain was interfering. Even more impressive is the fact that two thirds of those patients were even able to do so without the assistance of painkillers.

Dr. Rezaian says that there is nothing he enjoys more than seeing one of his UED patients get back on their feet and back to their normal activities. Life is too short to be living it with constant back pain, he concludes, and any patients suffering from such pain should call his office to see if they are candidates for the UED procedure. Interested patients can call today at 877-397-9616 or visit the California Orthopedic Medical Clinic online at Dr. Rezaian notes that he and his staff are committed to helping patients lead healthier and happier lives and are looking forward to hearing from members of the public.
