Article on Recent Grand Jury Law Brings Increased Accountability to Wrongful Death Cases, says the Law Offices of Burg & Brock
Date:9/2/2015

According to an article published August 12 by International Business Times, a new bill was signed into law by California Governor Jerry Brown that aims to do away with grand juries in cases meant to decide if a police officer used deadly or excessive force in the line of duty. Passed as a direct response to grand jury decisions in Ferguson and New York City that absolved police officers of charges in the deaths of two unarmed men, the law aims to make processes for trying police officers more transparent so determining guilt or negligence can be taken out of back rooms and into the public eye. According to the experienced attorneys at The Law Offices of Burg & Brock in Los Angeles, this law is part of a positive trend towards transparency when determining culpability in a wide range of legal cases, involving business as well as government entities. As a personal injury firm, Burg & Brock notes that, while the primary purpose of injury lawsuits are to properly compensate victims for their injuries, they can also serve as a kind of deterrent to prevent people and organizations from behaving dangerously or negligently in the future. According to the law firm, there are several types of personal injury cases in particular that can prevent further injuries or deaths with this type of transparent deterrent:

  • Product Liability – Cameron Yadidi Brock, the head litigator at the Law Offices of Burg & Brock, notes that product liability cases are a good example of those that can be prevented by past cases that serve as a deterrent and teach companies lessons about product safety. He notes that, to help prevent companies from becoming lax in the product safety environment, it is important to cultivate an environment that holds individuals and organizations accountable for any negligence that leads to injuries.
  • Motorcycle Accidents – As an experienced motorcycle accident attorney, Mr. Brock also knows all too well that individual drivers can ignore motorcyclists on the road in a way that can often result in a crash. He notes that the more transparency and awareness there is about motorcycle accidents and the outcomes of motorcycle accident cases, the more the need to accommodate motorcyclists on the road will be present on the mind of drivers on their daily commutes.

Across all cases, backroom decisions similar to grand jury cases can make it easier for jurists to let negligent or guilty parties off the hook. While baseless and vindictive lawsuits should be strongly discouraged, The Law Offices of Burg & Brock stress that every party that actually behaved negligently should be appropriately penalized and, when possible, compelled to provide compensation. Those who have suffered an injury resulting from another party’s negligence can call The Law Offices of Burg & Brock at 1-888-979-7979 or visit the firm online at http://www.LegalDefenders.com.
