Article on Commitment to Weight Loss Highlights the Resolve Needed to Pursue Serious Solutions, Notes Dr. Michael Feiz
Date:12/29/2015

According to an article published December 9th by Health Aim, a new poll has shown that, although 90 percent of overweight Americans say that they would like to lose weight, only around 50 percent of those people were found to be serious about their weight loss goals when pressed further. According to Los Angeles area bariatric surgeon Michael Feiz M.D., F.A.C.S., it is important for overweight and obese individuals to closely examine their goals and willingness to do whatever is needed to reach those goals when considering different weight loss options. He explains that, while weight loss surgery has been proven time and time again to be the most effective way for severely obese patients to lose a significant amount of weight, patients must be fully committed to their weight loss journey for the procedures to be effective.

Dr. Feiz explains that, despite some peoples’ perceptions, weight loss surgery is not in any way an instant fix to obesity, but instead gives patients the necessary tools to conquer the difficulties of portion control. However, Dr. Feiz explains that, while it significantly reduces the appetite, weight loss surgery still requires patients to adapt to a very new relationship with food. And, while the majority of patients are able to do so and ultimately find success in losing their excess weight, some patients do find it difficult.

He explains that this need to commit fully is also reflected in the requirements imposed by insurance companies for those seeking coverage for weight loss surgery. Most insurance companies require that patients undergo a basic psychological evaluation to ensure that the patient is capable of adapting to the new lifestyle. Put simply, Dr. Feiz says that, although insurance companies are well aware of the superb results that weight loss surgery can have for committed patients, they do not want to waste money covering a procedure for someone who is not completely on board to make the necessary lifestyle changes.

Dr. Feiz also notes that, while those electing a Lap Band procedure always have the option of having the band removed later, those who choose the more popular sleeve gastrectomy procedure will have the gastric sleeve for life, so they need to be sure of their decision. On the other hand, Dr. Feiz explains that many of his patients are comforted by the permanence of the gastric sleeve, considering that the difficulty of keeping weight off in the long term is often what stopped them beating back obesity in the past.
