Applied Research Associates Remembers Tim Samaras
Date:6/4/2013

Albuquerque, NM (PRWEB) June 04, 2013

Former employee and a friend, Tim Samaras was killed by a tornado in Oklahoma on Friday, May 31, 2013. Tim was working to solve problems of national importance. His efforts to improve the understanding of tornadoes was directly aimed at improving the safety and well-being of people across the country.

During his decade-long affiliation with ARA, Tim distinguished himself through his engineering skill and leadership. In 2001 he received an ARA Technical Achievement Award and an NTSB special recognition award for outstanding performance on the TWA flight 800 crash investigation.

After leaving ARA, Tim founded the research group TWISTEX (Tactical Weather Instrumented Sampling in Tornadoes EXperiment). His focus on developing instruments to measure forces inside tornadoes and to photograph the conditions has been a critical addition to radar data. Tim is credited with the world record for measuring the lowest barometric pressure drop (100 millibars) inside of a tornado.

Our deepest sympathies are with the Samaras family, who is dealing not only with Tim's death but also the death of Tim's son, Paul, who was working with his father and in the vehicle when the tornado struck. Like the name of his DVD-series, Driven by Passion, Tim was driven to better understand tornadoes to help make his neighbors safer. We mourn his loss.

The articles below demonstrate Tim’s significant contributions to the scientific community:
