Date:11/28/2008

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine, Nov. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine announced today that its associates have pledged more than $185,000 to support 212 not-for-profit organizations as part of the company's annual Associate Giving Campaign. The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation will match 50 percent of associate pledges, increasing the total to more than $277,500.

"Every day our associates work to make a positive difference in the lives of our members and Maine communities," said Dan Corcoran, president, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine. "The generosity shown during this year's associate giving campaign is truly remarkable. In these challenging economic times, our associates continued to exceed all expectations and surpassed our company-wide goal for total participation."

Nationwide, associates of Anthem's parent company pledged more than $24 million to more than 9,000 charities.

During 2008, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine will have provided more than a million dollars in associate contributions, foundation grants, charitable donations and sponsorships. In Maine, Anthem Foundation grants were awarded to the United Way in support of their Let's Go initiative which promotes health eating and increased physical activity among youth in 12 Greater Portland communities, a four school district wellness project in central Maine, and an emergency grant to the American Red Cross Pine Tree Chapter to assist with flood relief in Aroostook County last April.

"Maine's community agencies serve as a vital public safety net," noted Corcoran. "In difficult economic times like these, the role of these agencies is more important than ever before." Among other examples, he cited the Maine Children's Cancer program which provides research-based care, education, psychological services, outreach and advocacy for patients and their families.

"Through the efforts of our foundations across the country, we help address local health concerns," said Caroline 'Caz' Matthews, president of the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation. "But we go beyond simply providing dollars to volunteering in our communities to have an even greater impact. In the end, our focus allows us to have a measurable and sustainable impact on critical health care and other needs in the communities we serve."
