Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Connecticut Ranks in Top 10 of Insurers Nationwide on U.S. News & World Report/National Committee for Quality Assurance America's Best Health Plans List
Date:11/13/2008

NORTH HAVEN, Conn., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Connecticut is ranked 7th in the nation out of 287 health insurance plans, according to the current (Nov. 17) issue of U.S. News & World Report/NCQA America's Best Health Plans 2008-09. This recognition as one of the nation's best health plans is the result of outstanding overall performance in clinical care measures, member satisfaction and NCQA accreditation.

"We are very proud to be one of the highest ranked plans in the country. Our ranking is a testament to the hard work our associates do every day to help ensure members have access to the high quality medical care they need, when they need it," said David R. Fusco, president, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Connecticut. "We continually work to improve quality through innovative programs and services that help our members access high quality medical care and help them live healthier lives."

Anthem scored in the 90th percentile (i.e., the top 10 percentile of health plans in the nation) in several key Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Sets *(HEDIS(R)) Effectiveness of Care measures, including childhood immunizations, cervical cancer screening, high blood pressure and antidepressant medication management in optimal practitioner contacts for medication management. Anthem works with its members to help improve their health through education, reminders and tools to manage their conditions such as a Heart Health Calendar and a Women's Health Reminder.

America's Best Health Plans rankings are based on prevention, treatment and customer experience scores on a range of measures that health plans voluntarily report to NCQA. These scores are compiled in NCQA's Quality Compass database.

"As the health insurer in Connecticut with the largest membership, we are not just committed to improving the lives of our members; we are dedicated to improving the overall health of the communities in which we live," continued Fusco. "Through collaborations with other health care organizations, providers and community groups, we have developed and implemented programs that have a significant impact on the health of the communities we serve."

Anthem Health Plans in Maine and New Hampshire also made U.S. News & World Report/NCQA's Top 20 commercial plans.

"America's Best Health Plans is a practical tool that helps consumers make informed decisions when choosing a health plan," said NCQA President Margaret E. O'Kane. "It lets consumers know which plans have demonstrated they can deliver the highest levels of care and service."

The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. NCQA accredits and certifies a wide range of health care organizations and manages the evolution of HEDIS, the performance measurement tool used by more than 90 percent of the nation's health plans. NCQA is committed to providing health care quality information through the web and the media in order to help consumers, employers and others make more informed health care choices.
