An Incredible Weight Loss Camp Success Story Shares Her Perspective on Obesity Epidemic
Date:6/13/2013

Santa Cruz, CA (PRWEB) June 13, 2013

Elisabeth McDonald, a 16 year old from Marshfield, Massachusetts, sought to fight the obesity epidemic that plagues many teens by embarking on her own own personal journey at BalanceME California weight loss camp. She looked to find weight loss, fitness improvements, and greater self-confidence. In eight weeks, she lost 40 lbs and gained motivation and skills to stay healthy. Nearly a year later, she has maintained her success.

Elisabeth recently shared her perspective on the causes America's weight issue with a research paper released by BalanceME entitled, "The Causes of Adolescent Obesity".

“Most of my weight gain came from being stressed. My sophomore year of high school was the hardest year of school I ever had,” said Elisabeth McDonald, “Every day we all went to Wendy’s and I just didn’t know how to eat healthy.” Before joining BalanceME and losing weight, Elisabeth was part of the one-third of our country’s teens who are overweight or obese.

Elisabeth and her family went through similar process like a lot of families in helping their teens try to lose weight. She started by considering a personal trainer. Some families look at a nutritionist, joining a local gym, or push their child to join a sports team or league, hoping that will change the path they see their child on.

“What studies and experience have shown is that the best chance at success in weight loss is a combination of nutrition and activity paired with a therapeutic approach to behavioral change,” stated John Gordon, CEO of BalanceME weight loss camps,“Diets are so prone to failure because it’s an extreme, temporary change that doesn’t deal with the emotional and psychological side of changing your habits and lifestyle as a whole.”

BalanceMe weight loss camps in California and Massachusetts use their ME Plan to motivate and educate campers on getting healthy. With a comprehensive weight loss camp approach, BalanceME’s ME Plan uses nutrition and culinary education, skill development in sports and activities, plus lifestyle counseling with a focus around self-esteem and motivation. BalanceME’s patented Health Score helps campers find success on more than just the scale by measuring strength, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, resting pulse rate, blood pressure, and more.

Not only did Elisabeth lose 40 pounds last summer at BalanceME weight loss camp, she also improved her BalanceME Health Score 122%. Her changes included nearly seven inches off her waist, a 40% improvement in cholesterol, nearly 3 minutes off of her timed mile, and significant improvements in self-esteem, strength, and flexibility.

“I was initially embarrassed about the idea of going to a weight loss camp,” said Elisabeth,”but then I read about the BalanceMe program with cooking and sports, and it looked like fun. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done…and the most rewarding.” When things were hard Elisabeth credits remembering why she went to camp in the first place and the inspiring staff as her motivators.

To Elisabeth “strawberries now taste like ice cream!” This past year at school she continued her fitness routine and credits BalanceME for helping her find exercise she actually enjoys. And now, when her peers want to head to Wendy’s, Elisabeth has a plan and a nutrition education to help her make healthier food choices. Elisabeth will return to BalanceME weight loss camp California this summer to mentor new campers, do an counselor-in-training internship, and will work to keep getting fitter and healthier.
