American College of Lifestyle Medicine to Host Lifestyle Medicine 2016, with Healthy People, Healthy Planet as its Theme
Date:4/14/2016

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) will host Lifestyle Medicine 2016, October 23-26 at the Naples Grande Resort in Naples, FL. This CME accredited conference is regarded as the nation’s premier medical education event focused on lifestyle used as a therapeutic intervention to rein in the chronic disease that’s driving 80% or more of all healthcare spending.

While the majority of the speakers and workshops will focus on the clinical practice of lifestyle in medicine, several of the event’s keynote speakers will also draw the connection between the lifestyle choices that are not only best for our health but those that are vital to environmental sustainability.

"Lifestyle medicine is all about the power of behavioral choices to impact our medical destinies, with the potential to prevent, treat, and reverse disease,” explained ACLM President David Katz, MD. “Fortuitously, the fundamentals of living and eating for the sake of our own health redounds importantly to the health of the planet, as well. By addressing this, we expand the reach and rationale of lifestyle medicine, and build bridges to the separate domain of environmental science which shares many of our goals. In exploring, and nurturing this potential unity with new colleagues, there is greater strength to advance our shared mission: healthy people, healthy planet."

Lifestyle Medicine keynote speakers will include Erkki Vartiainen, MD, PhD, co-principal investigator of Finland’s North Karelia Project—the world's most successful heart disease reduction program; Food Tank President and Co-founder Danielle Nierenberg; Stanford Professor of Medicine Christopher Gardner, PhD; Harvard’s Planetary Health Alliance Clinical Instructor Samuel Myers, MD, PhD; food/environment author and researcher Richard Oppenlander, DDS; Vitality Global Health Chief Officer Derek Yach; NutritionFacts.org founder and author of the New York Times Bestseller ‘How Not to Die,’ Michael Greger, MD; and ACLM President David Katz, MD, MPH.

“Human health and environmental health are interwoven; this year's keynote speakers will elevate the consciousness about lifestyle medicine being a key to both,” said Planning Committee Chair Amanda McKinney, MD. “We’ll also feature exceptional presentations about how to make lifestyle medicine a feasible and practical business model, as well as update attendees about the latest science. We’ll also have ample time to exercise on the beach, soak in the beautiful Florida sunshine and enjoy wonderful plant-based food as a community.”

Poster presentations will be showcased as part of the conference. Pre-conference workshops on culinary medicine, medical fitness, and integrating health coaching into clinical practice are scheduled for Saturday, October 22, with the second annual Healthcare Transformation Summit taking place on Sunday, October 23. The Lifestyle Medicine 2016 conference kicks off Sunday evening, October 23 and runs through noon on Wednesday, October 26, followed by a closing workshop on group practice models in lifestyle medicine.
