American Cancer Society Recommends Virtual Colonoscopy

o expedite issuing reimbursement codes and physician training."

Kahn observed that it will still probably be at least a year or two before the procedure is covered by insurance. In the meantime, Kahn's center will continue to provide the virtual colonoscopy -- also known as CT colonography -- to residents on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border.

Virtual colonoscopy is a clinically validated, minimally invasive procedure that uses CT scanning technology to produce a three-dimensional fly-through of the entire colon with no sedation required. Patients can resume normal activity immediately after the procedure.

Virtual colonoscopy is one of the four recommended tests to screen for colon cancer:

-- CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy) every five years

-- flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years

-- colonoscopy every 10 years

-- double contrast barium enema every five years

Preliminary results of the National CT Colonography Trial (ACRIN 6664) coordinated by the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) have found that virtual colonoscopy is just as accurate as optical (traditional) colonoscopy for the detection of cancer and clinically significant polyps when conducted with proper training and techniques. Detailed results of the study are expected to be published later this spring.
