American Board of Family Medicine Obstetrics Formed
Date:6/26/2009

The American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS), the nation's third largest nationally recognized physician multi-specialty certifying organization, has formed the American Board of Family Medicine Obstetrics® (ABFMO®).

Tampa, FA (Vocus) June 26, 2009 -- The American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS) today announced the formation of the American Board of Family Medicine Obstetrics® (ABFMO®), an innovative and new board of certification in support of family physicians that have completed advanced training in maternity care, including operative obstetrics.

ABFMO® was formed to fill a definitive need for family medicine obstetric physicians, according to ABFMO® Chair Daniel M. Avery, M.D. Dr. Avery is an Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University Of Alabama School Of Medicine. “There are many compelling reasons why board certification of family medicine physicians practicing obstetrics has become so important,” Avery said. “Board certification has become a necessary and essential component in the practice of all medical disciplines today.”

“The public has come to expect that physicians will be board certified,” added Vice Chair Mark Loafman, M.D., M.P.H. “Issues surrounding authentication of training and capability of fellowship graduates, the comparability of training with OB/GYNs, and recognition of this unique subspecialty are best addressed by board certification,” Loafman said. Dr. Loafman is Vice President of Medical Affairs for Norwegian American Hospital in Chicago and Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

The process of certification for family medicine obstetrics for eligible applicants involves, among other requirements, satisfactory completion of a written examination, an oral examination, and confirmation of surgical competency by peer observers. Questions and inquiries are welcome and should be directed to Director of Certification Cassandra Newby at 813-433-2277 or cnewby@aapsus.org.

ABFMO® is a Member Board of the American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS). ABPS, the third largest physician multi-specialty certifying organization in the United States, is the official certifying arm of the American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc. (AAPS). ABPS provides board certification to thousands of allopathic (M.D.) and osteopathic (D.O.) physicians in 16 medical specialties and has Diplomates in all of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Canada. In its 59th year, the AAPS is a not-for-profit organization with headquarters in Tampa, Florida. More information is available online at www.abfmo.org and www.abpsus.org.
