Allsup Observes May 12 as National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day
Date:5/9/2013

Belleville, Ill. (PRWEB) May 09, 2013

National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day is May 12, and Allsup wants those who suffer from the debilitating condition to know help is available in coping with fibromyalgia and qualifying for Social Security Disability Insurance(SSDI) benefits. Allsup, which provides SSDI representation, veterans disability appeal and Medicare plan selection services, joins organizations across the U.S. in observing fibromyalgia awareness this week.

More than 5 million Americans suffer from fibromyalgia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Many people are diagnosed during middle age and prevalence increases with age, the CDC reported.

Individuals who can no longer work because of the condition must provide documentation of how the condition has affected their lives and livelihood in order to receive SSDI benefits. A lack of understanding fibromyalgia can be a huge roadblock to getting help. “Awareness and education are so important,” said Tai Venuti, Strategic Alliances manager for Allsup. “We encourage people with fibromyalgia to join support and advocacy groups such as the National Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain Association (NFMCPA).”

The national association organizes “Walk To Cure FM” events across the U.S., as well as community picnics and other events to raise awareness. The 2013 theme is “C.A.R.E. & Make Fibromyalgia Visible,” with the acronym standing for “contribute, advocate, research and educate.” Find more details online at http://www.fmcpaware.org.

Fibromyalgia and Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits
Women who are hospitalized with fibromyalgia and related musculoskeletal disorders are 10 times more likely than men who are hospitalized with fibromyalgia to quit work, according to the CDC. Symptoms of fibromyalgia include widespread pain, sleep loss and fatigue, tingling and numbness in hands and feet, severe headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, difficulty thinking and remembering, and depression.

“Filing for federal disability insurance benefits can be a long and stressful process for anyone, but it can be especially difficult for individuals with fibromyalgia,” Venuti said. In some communities, organizations report a shortage of physicians knowledgeable about fibromyalgia.

“Some people may go years without a diagnosis, and gathering the medical evidence required to meet SSDI program requirements is challenging.” Venuti added. “But it’s critical to be receiving physician treatment for your condition.”

SSDI is a federally mandated disability insurance program overseen by the Social Security Administration (SSA). It operates separately from the retirement and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. Benefits are paid for by workers and employers through FICA payroll taxes. SSDI provides monthly benefits to individuals who are under full retirement age (age 65 or older) and who can no longer work because of a disability (injury, illness or condition) that is expected to last for more than 12 months or is terminal.

“Allsup disability professionals work every day to answer questions and help people who have fibromyalgia understand how they may qualify for SSDI benefits,” Venuti added.
