Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals™ Trains First Responders in Oil Spill Simulation
Date:8/26/2014

New Orleans, LA (PRWEB) August 26, 2014

The Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals (AHMP), the only U.S. organization devoted to the professional advancement of the hazardous materials management field, brings together leading hazardous materials professionals for its 2014 National Conference in New Orleans, LA from August 24-27, 2014. Through interactive sessions with world-renowned experts and a real-time emergency response scenario simulating an oil spill on Lake Pontchartrain, the conference will train first responders who help ensure the security and safety of U.S. citizens.

This year marks the 27th anniversary of AHMP’s National Conference and will bring together approximately 500 of the leading experts on environmental, health, safety and security (EHS&S) management to network, showcase new products and services, and learn about policy and industry trends.

Emergency Response Scenario Prepares First-Responders

The possibility of an oil spill is all-too real and something that hazmat professionals and citizens of the Gulf Coast have dealt with first-hand. With thousands of oil drilling locations off the coast of the U.S., the risk of a spill remains a constant threat. The Emergency Response Scenario will take participants through the stages of an oil spill emergency. Participants will learn how to contain the spill with a standard issue spill kit, and then begin cleaning the waterway by utilizing equipment such as containment boom and oil skimmers.

“This year’s Emergency Response Scenario simulation of an oil spill gives real-time, hands-on training to the very professionals who would be responding to this type of situation,” said Cedric Calhoun, executive director, AHMP. “This real-world simulation gives hazmat professionals the same materials they would have on hand, and trains them how to work through this type of crisis with a limited supply of equipment available.”
