Allergy Season Affects Pets as Well as People

Spring is allergy season not only for people, but also for pets. Assisi Veterinary Hospital urges pet owners to be aware of the potential threat of allergies to their pets and offers treatments for pet allergies.

An allergy is a state of over-reactivity of the immune system to a particular substance called an allergen. Allergen exposure may cause an over-reaction. This means that the immune response, which normally protects the pet against infection and disease, can actually be harmful to the body.

Common symptoms of pet allergies include itching, coughing, sneezing, runny eyes or nose and possible vomiting and diarrhea depending on the allergen.

Assisi Veterinary Hospital offers various treatments for different allergies. Treatments offered range from different antihistamines to steroids and other injections. Assisi will also conduct allergy testing and food trial avoidance to pinpoint what exactly is causing the allergy and what each pet should avoid.

Antihistamines block the effects of a chemical that triggers allergy symptoms. They’re sold over the counter and do not cause any harmful side effects. Prescription steroids can significantly suppress allergy symptoms. Steroids can be injected or taken orally. They begin at high doses and then taper off to small doses as their effectiveness decreases with more use. A series of allergy shots injecting whatever is causing the allergy under the pet’s skin can help as well. These injections work just like serum injections for people as the antigens cure allergies over time.

The most natural way to treat pet allergies is to avoid allergens. Allergens include mites, molds, grasses and pollens. Whatever it is that is causing a pet’s allergy, pet owners should try to avoid it.
