Aid in Recovery Comments on Effectiveness of Topiramate for Treating Cocaine Addiction

Aid in Recovery released a statement today commenting on a new study that examined the effectiveness of Topiramate, a pharmaceutical used to treat migraines and seizures, in treating cocaine and alcohol addiction.

The study (Topiramate for the Treatment of Cocaine Addiction: A Randomized Clinical Trial, December 2013) was authored by a group of 8 scholars and scientists from prestigious universities around the US, and used a randomized clinical trial to examine Topiramate as a possible treatment option for cocaine and alcohol addiction.

After several rounds of double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled testing, the study found that Topiramate was more effective than placebo reducing cocaine use-days and increasing associated measures of clinical improvement among individuals suffering from cocaine addiction.

Aid in Recovery will continue to monitor the use of Topiramate as it goes through more clinical trials on its way towards being approved for use in addiction treatment.
