Agein Corporation, a Leading Anti-Aging Company, Responds to Study Showing Personal Care Products a Possible Source of Harmful Parabens for Babies
Date:12/21/2013

Boston, MA (PRWEB) December 21, 2013

Agein.com, the Internet’s premier anti-aging web site focusing on anti-aging tips, news, and advice from some of the foremost experts in the industry, is responding to new research suggesting that personal care products are possible sources of potentially harmful parabens for babies.

According to a recent study published in Environmental Science & Technology, infant and toddlers in the U.S. are likely being exposed to potentially harmful ingredients called parabens and phthalates through a variety of personal care products. Researchers collected 170 samples of makeup, lotions, shampoos, and other products, including 20 for babies, and tested them for nine phthalates and six parabens. The results showed phthalate concentrations were low, but parabens were common. Most strikingly, researchers found exposure levels to parabens could be as much as two to three times higher in children than adult women. (Source: Guo, Y. and Kannan, K., “A Survey of Phthalates and Parabens in Personal Care Products from the United States and Its Implications for Human Exposure,” Environmental Science & Technology, November 21, 2013.)

“Parabens are used as a preservative in many cosmetics and anti-aging hair products,” says Dr. Kevin J. McLaughlin, Agein.com’s Anti-Aging Specialist. “It’s easy to tell if a personal product contains any: look on the label for methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben (E216), butylparaben, and isobutylparaben.”

According to Dr. McLaughlin, some personal care companies use parabens because they are absorbed by the skin very quickly. Unfortunately, these same substances have been shown to affect hormone function, specifically by mimicking estrogen. Clinical research also suggests there is a possible link between parabens and other health issues, including breast cancer and an increased risk for asthma. “Unlike the pharmaceutical industry, the ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products are not regulated. This means consumers need to be aware of what goes into their personal care products and the potential health concerns,” Dr. McLaughlin adds. “Until further research is done on the long-term effects parabens have on the body, consumers might want to ask themselves if applying moisturizers, lotions, and anti-aging products that contain parabens is worth the risk.”

“These recent study results raise compelling questions about the presence of parabens in the personal care products we put on ourselves and our children,” he concludes. “Those looking for a moisturizer or anti-aging product safe for use on their children should consider products that contain Alpine rose stem cell technology to protect skin against humidity and dryness; Matrixyl 3000 to target the thin, delicate skin and fine lines around the eyes and mouth; and Argireline to reduce the look of wrinkles.”
