Agein.com, the Internet’s premier anti-aging web site focusing on anti-aging tips, news, and advice from some of the foremost experts in the industry, is responding to new research suggesting that personal care products are possible sources of potentially harmful parabens for babies.

According to a recent study published in Environmental Science & Technology, infant and toddlers in the U.S. are likely being exposed to potentially harmful ingredients called parabens and phthalates through a variety of personal care products. Researchers collected 170 samples of makeup, lotions, shampoos, and other products, including 20 for babies, and tested them for nine phthalates and six parabens. The results showed phthalate concentrations were low, but parabens were common. Most strikingly, researchers found exposure levels to parabens could be as much as two to three times higher in children than adult women. “Parabens are used as a preservative in many cosmetics and anti-aging hair products,” says Dr. Kevin J. McLaughlin, Agein.com’s Anti-Aging Specialist. “It’s easy to tell if a personal product contains any: look on the label for methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben (E216), butylparaben, and isobutylparaben.”

According to Dr. McLaughlin, some personal care companies use parabens because they are absorbed by the skin very quickly. Unfortunately, these same substances have been shown to affect hormone function, specifically by mimicking estrogen.
