A new report and video from Health News Wires titled After NFL Team Loses, Fans Fill Up on High Calorie and High Fat Foods describes how fans eat significantly more fat and calories the day after their favorite team loses.
After examining the food diaries of people in cities that had NFL teams and people in cities that did not, it was evident that people in cities whose team lost ate more junk food, saturated fat, and calories on the Monday following the loss. The increased consumption of junk food, including pizza, wings, beer and nachos was greater if the team lost by only a few points.
Specifically, a loss by an NFL team meant the people in that team’s city consumed 10 percent more calories and 16 percent more saturated fat than normal on the following Monday. On the other hand, when a team won, the people in that city consumed nearly 10 percent less saturated fat and 5 percent less calories than normal.
Further proof of sports influence on diet was demonstrated when fans watched a replay of their favorite team’s loss. Fans of losing teams consistently reported an overwhelming urge to eat unhealthy food; much more so than after they watched a replay of a victory by their favorite team.
“We love our favorite teams, but we need to love our health too,” said Michael Healey of Health News Wires. “Eating more saturated fat and calories leads to increased risk of weight gain, heart disease and diabetes.”
