Milwaukee, WI (PRWEB) May 26, 2010 -- 79% of women with silicone gel-filled breast implants will have at least one broken implant within 11 years. Smart Choice MRI offers the most affordable screening exam for detecting “Silent” ruptures. Smart Choice MRI has become the first MRI clinic in Milwaukee to offer a silicone implant rupture screening protocol at an affordable rate. Every rupture screening procedure costs only $600, up to a 75% savings when compared to other MRI providers.

Since the FDA approved the general use of silicone implants, guidelines for MRI screening post-surgery have been required to monitor implant activity. According to an FDA MRI study, silicone implant rupture can be a major concern: 48% of women who have had silicone implants for only 6-10 years and 79% of women who have had implants for 11-15 years have experienced at least one ruptured implant. Because these ruptures are most often “silent” in that there are no symptoms, periodic screening is required. Leaks are proven to be best-detected utilizing MRI technology. The FDA guideline recommends initial MRI screening three years after surgery and every two years thereafter. A very large hurdle for patients is the cost of the MRI; the cost after two screening exams can exceed the cost of the initial surgery, and in most circumstances will not be covered by insurance.

“The cost of breast augmentation is around $7000. Because MRIs in the Milwaukee area cost as much as $8500 at local hospitals, the FDA screening guidelines could cost more than the initial surgery,” says Milwaukee plastic surgeon Dr. Michelle Bonness. Many area surgeons are having a hard time finding patients that can financially afford to follow the FDA guidelines. “Our program makes following the FDA implant rupture detection guidelines much more affordable,” says Eric Haberichter, Co-Founder and Business Development Director for Smart Choice MRI. “Every MRI at Smart Choice MRI is $600. The exam takes approximately 45 minutes and patients can be scheduled the same or next day for the procedure.”
