Advocate Named One Of The Nation's Top 10 Health Systems

Advocate Health Care has been named one of the nation's top 10 health systems based on clinical performance according to Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare.

Oak Brook, IL (Vocus) August 14, 2009 -- Advocate Health Care has been named one of the nation's top 10 health systems based on clinical performance according to Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare.

Researchers from the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® program analyzed the clinical quality and efficiency of 252 health systems in order to develop this inaugural 100 Top Health System National Benchmarks for Quality and Efficiency.

"Our commitment to clinical excellence and patient safety is driven by our focus to perform at the top decile in all quality measures," said Advocate president and CEO, Jim Skogsbergh. "We are honored to be recognized as a leader quality, a vital focus of the health care industry."

The Thomson Reuters study assessed all U.S. health systems with two or more short-term, general, non-federal hospitals. Researchers looked at five metrics that gauge clinical quality and efficiency: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, and adherence to clinical standards of care based on core measures published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Advocate, and the other top health systems, says the report, are providing higher quality care, with fewer mortalities and patient complications and better adherence to patient safety standards and core measures of care. They also are treating patients more efficiently, with substantially shorter patient stays.

"The findings in the Thomson Reuters study illustrate Advocate's clinical expertise and dedication to the health and wellness of our communities," said Lee Sacks, M.D. executive vice president and chief medical officer, Advocate Health Care. "Our performance clearly validates Advocate's ongoing efforts to create a true culture of safety and establishes Advocate as a national leader in health outcomes and patient safety."

According to Thomson Reuters, the study sets national benchmarks for quality and efficiency and extends transparency regarding the performance of health care organizations from hospitals to health systems of health care systems' and hospitals' performance.

The study states that if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as Medicare patients treated at Advocate or one of the other top 10 health systems:

  • More than 47,000 additional patients would survive each year.
  • Nearly 92,000 patient complications would be avoided annually.
  • The average patient stay would decrease by more than half a day.
  • If the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the impact would be even greater.

Advocate was noted for having the lowest score among the top 10 systems in the risk-adjusted complications index category. A lower complications index indicates fewer patients with complications, considering what would be expected based on patient characteristics.

Earlier this year, two of Advocate's nine hospitals, Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital and Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, were named to Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® list.
