AdvaMed Pleased to Work with the White House to Advance Health Reform
Date:5/11/2009

WASHINGTON, May 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Stephen J. Ubl, president and CEO of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), issued the following statement regarding today's White House announcement of an industry consensus group to advance health care reform efforts:

"We are very pleased to join with President Obama and our industry colleagues to advance the important goal of improving access to affordable, quality health care. As our joint letter points out, working together 'we will do our part to achieve the Administration's goal of decreasing by 1.5 percentage points the annual health care spending growth rate -- saving $2 trillion or more. This represents more than a 20% reduction in the projected rate of growth in total health care spending.'

"We are developing the specifics of how to best achieve the ambitious goals set today, and we do so certain in our commitment to meaningful health reform. Achieving these goals will not be easy, but we are committed to working with the other organizations represented in this group and with the Administration and Congress to better manage rising health care costs while enhancing health care quality. Together, we can squeeze the waste and inefficiency out of the health care system. Together, we can reorient the system so that it keeps people healthy rather than only treating them when they are sick. Together we can make dramatic strides in reducing the economic and human burden of disease. Together, we can sustain and accelerate the medical progress that is providing new life-saving and life-enhancing treatments and cures every day.

"We are at a pivotal moment in the health reform effort. The meeting that occurred today and the cross-industry consensus it represents are an important step toward making comprehensive health reform a reality."
