Acting U.S. Surgeon General “Gets Real” with High School and College Students About Pressing Health Concerns and the Role of Humor in Wellbeing, on EICnetwork.tv
Date:12/18/2013

Washington, DC (PRWEB) December 18, 2013

The Entertainment Industries Council recently hosted Acting U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Boris Lushniak along with Junior Reporters from West Potomac Academy and George Mason University, for an in-depth discussion of health issues. The one-hour special covering tobacco cessation, sun safety, mental health, suicide prevention, exercise, and other topics, premiers today on the EICnetwork.tv Health & Wellness Channel, produced in cooperation with Internet TV Network, TV Worldwide.

“Look at yourself, look at your friends, make sure you have the connectivity. Suicide results from people feeling disconnected, so take care of yourself, but also take care of those people around you,” Dr. Lushniak commented to a student during a discussion of the National Action Strategy for Suicide Prevention.

In his role, Dr. Lushniak articulates the best available scientific information to the public regarding ways to improve personal health and the health of the Nation. He also oversees the operations of the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps, comprising of approximately 6,700 uniformed health officers who serve in locations around the world to promote, protect, and advance the health and safety of our Nation.

“After the age of 26, no one becomes a smoker, so as a public health guy I know the group I need to emphasize, I know it’s got to be from the age of 12-26, if I can influence that part of the population, its only 14 years, and have them make an empowered decision with all the social media information. [For them] to say I know there is peer pressure, I know some people think this is cool but at the end of the day I’m actually smart enough to make a decision and I’m going to put this [cigarette] down,” said Dr. Lushniak in response to a student's questions about tobacco dangers.

“The fact that the Acting Surgeon General was able to sit down, face to face with these young people and give them straight answers to their questions and concerns was amazingly impactful. Most of these students will take his words to heart, share his warnings, advice and healthy living tip with others and, hopefully, spread awareness and change among their peers as quickly as their Instagram photos and selfies with Dr. Lushniak spread across social media,” said Brian Dyak, President & CEO, EIC.

“We are pleased to work with the Entertainment Industries Council to produce this important content for distribution on the newly-launched EICtv Network,” remarked Dave Gardy, Chairman and CEO of TV Worldwide. “EICtv is one of the fastest growing Internet TV outlets on our TV Worldwide Network and it’s because of quality outreach programming like this. We applaud EIC for their groundbreaking work.”
