Acti-Kare Expands to Bring Revolutionary In-Home Care Services to Hunterdon, Somerset, Morris and Warren County Areas

Thinking ahead for appropriate care for aging loved ones is not usually a common conversation that comes up in day to day discussion. Most people never even consider it until they’re forced to. Oftentimes, there is a sudden event that causes the need to look outside the family for help with a loved one’s care. Acti-Kare Responsive In-Home Care of Hunterdon is positioned to fulfill those needs, whether it’s something as simple as occasional transportation to appointments, companion and homemaking services, all the way up to full non-medical personal care attention. “The perception that many people have when they think about a caregiver coming into their home is that it’s only for people who need help with all aspects of daily living. Rarely is that the case,” says Jacqueline Moussa, co-owner and area director in Hunterdon. “Our caregivers at Acti-Kare know the importance of remaining as active and independent as long as possible and, to the extent that we can, help assist clients in maintaining their activities of daily living.” In many cases, that means starting care early while the client can still be an active part of their own care plan. This gives them time to get used to their caregiver and find comfort in knowing that Acti-Kare is a consistent and reliable part of their life if the time comes when more assistance is needed.

Moussa has worked with elderly and disabled people from a very young age. She began taking care of her disabled sister and then transitioned to working professionally in long term care and rehab facilities. Moussa states, “My early clinical experience as a CNA, and later a nurse, gave me the privilege of working with individuals who dealt with physical, mental, neurocognitive, age related and rehabilitative issues. Although I found this work to be rewarding, it quickly became obvious to me that being removed from their home and family lengthened recovery times and outcomes of the people I cared for.”

This observation brought Moussa to a crossroads in her professional career. It prompted her to pursue a degree in healthcare management and administration and advocate for the aging population in a different way. When she discovered Acti-Kare Responsive In-Home Care, she knew the fit was perfect for where her passion and training intersected. “It didn’t take long for me to realize that Acti-Kare was the right solution to my desire to help seniors in a way that was different. I wanted to have an impact and help people engage life and not simply exist.” states Moussa.
Jacqueline has partnered with Dr. Clint Stankiewicz, a licensed psychologist in both New Jersey & Pennsylvania with over 10 years of clinical experience. He is Board Certified in Clinical Psychology and Cognitive and Behavioral Psychology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Psychology. It is through his own personal journey and experiences caring for elders in his family that motivated him to follow his passion and develop his skills in extended care; working with the medically ill, geriatric and disabled population. Stankiewicz tell us, “This work has given me an in depth understanding of how the effects of neurocognitive, emotional, and behavioral factors impact a person’s health and wellness. I also realize how critically important it is for people to be able to remain in their homes surrounded by loved ones for happiness and quality of life.”

There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to home care, which is why great attention to detail and time goes into understanding and assessing an individual’s needs. It’s important to incorporate a customized care plan in a manner that is comfortable for the client, their family and the caregiver. “It didn’t take us long to decide to bring Acti-Kare to the Hunterdon area. As soon as we realized the company operated with the same integrity, compassion, and superior care we desired, we knew this was the right fit and jumped at the opportunity,” Moussa says.
With 8,000 people turning 65 every single day in the United States there is a growing shift in the traditional aging model. Now, more than ever, seniors are choosing to “age in place,” and that usually means remaining in a private home or independent living community as long as possible. “We know people are happiest and most comfortable in their own homes. We’re thrilled to know that we can play such a critical part in helping maintain their quality of life, comfort, and peace of mind. We’ve seen firsthand that it not only makes life better for our clients, but their extended family as well.”
