Abt Associates Names Dr. Scott W. Royal to Lead Domestic Health Division
Date:12/16/2008

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Abt Associates announced that Scott W. Royal, Ph.D., M.P.H., a social and behavioral epidemiologist and expert in managing clinical research programs, has been promoted to Division Vice President and will lead its Domestic Health Division. Dr. Royal will oversee the company's Behavioral Health, Health Policy, and Public Health and Epidemiology practices.

"We are very pleased that Scott has agreed to take on the leadership role for our Domestic Health Division," said Kathleen Flanagan, Group Vice President for Social, Economic and Health Policy. "He is a recognized clinical researcher, specializing in epidemiologic and survey research, for a broad range of government and private clients such as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and private pharmaceutical and industry clients. His demonstrated ability to successfully blend deep substantive and technical experience with business leadership makes him the right person to position us for the accelerated growth of our health research and implementation capabilities."

Dr. Royal was instrumental in designing and implementing a strategy that has significantly built the Abt Associates portfolio of work at the CDC. Under his leadership, the company has recently won positions on IDIQ contracts in the Chronic Disease and Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities Centers as a prime contractor and in the Center for HIV, Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) as a subcontractor. Abt Associates opened an office in Atlanta in July 2008 and is also now carrying out important work on registries for the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities.

Before joining Abt Associates, Dr. Royal managed the social and behavioral epidemiology program at Research Triangle Institute in Washington, D.C., where he led a research team that provided services to major federal health agencies. He received both his Ph.D. and M.P.H. degrees from Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health.

Abt Associates applies scientific research, technical assistance and consulting expertise to a wide range of social, economic and health policy issues; international development; clinical trials and registries; and complex business problems. Founded in 1965, the company provides services to U.S. federal, state and local governments; universities and foundations; media; and major corporations. Its staff of over 1,000 is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Atlanta, Georgia; Bethesda, Maryland; Durham, North Carolina; Lexington, Massachusetts (Abt Bio-Pharma Solutions, Inc.); New York, New York (Abt SRBI); and in Africa, Asia, Central Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.
