Date:5/4/2009

Nationwide Tour Offers Free Skin Cancer Screenings And Education about Skin Cancer Prevention

SKILLMAN, N.J., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- AVEENO(R), a brand of Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc., announces its second year of sponsorship of The Skin Cancer Foundation's "Road to Healthy Skin" tour. The free skin cancer screening tour kicks off today at Pershing Square, just outside of New York City's Grand Central Terminal, and will visit more than 80 locations across the country through September 2009. The tour will offer free, full body skin cancer screenings in a private room inside a 38-foot customized RV, conducted by local board-certified dermatologists who have volunteered their time and expertise.

Last year the tour attracted almost 7,000 visitors and screened over 3,000 people. Of those screened, more than 3,200 suspicious markings were detected and 39 suspected cases of melanoma were discovered. "Skin cancer is still the most common form of cancer in the United States, but it is also the most preventable and curable form of cancer if it is detected early," says dermatologist Jeanine Downie, MD. "We are proud of the amount of people we screened last year and that we identified over 900 potential skin cancers with 39 of them potentially being the most deadly form - melanoma. We hope to see an increase in the practice of preventative measures so that we can soon report a decrease in the number of new cases of skin cancer as a result of these tours."

According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, there are more cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon; in fact, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. Despite these staggering statistics, 40 percent of people admit that they never use sunscreen and only 11 percent use an SPF 15 or higher daily. "AVEENO(R) is committed to educating people nationwide about the importance of early detection, the need for an annual skin exam, and the importance of wearing sunscreen every day, all year long - no matter their skin color," says Mike Marquis, Marketing Director for AVEENO(R). "By sponsoring this tour for a second year, AVEENO(R) is confident that we can continue to help raise awareness of skin cancer prevention and detection so people can safely enjoy a healthy outdoor lifestyle."

At each tour stop, visitors will be invited to visit the RV and receive a quick, easy and potentially life-saving full body skin cancer screening. Educational materials will be provided so that visitors can learn how to perform monthly skin checks at-home and how to properly protect themselves from the sun on a daily basis. Samples of the new AVEENO(R) POSITIVELY AGELESS(TM) Sunblock Lotion SPF 70 for Face will be distributed as well as AVEENO(R) CONTINUOUS PROTECTION(R) suncare products for adult and baby. All AVEENO(R) suncare products feature the patented breakthrough sun protection technology, ACTIVE PHOTOBARRIER COMPLEX(TM) specifically created to deliver optimal, broad and photostable UVA/UVB protection with proper use. Wearing sunscreens with the ACTIVE PHOTOBARRIER COMPLEX(TM) daily is a preventative step everyone can take in protecting skin from the sun's harmful rays.
