Health & Human Services (HHS) deadline for implementing the changes required by HIPAA was September 23, 2013. HITECH which was enacted as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. These rules extend beyond the “Covered Entities,” organizations that are directly addressed by these regulatory acts, to the Business Associates who serve them and often handle Patient Health Information (PHI).
